We provided BREEAM consultancy advice to Mountbatten House, Southampton, which has been shortlisted as a finalist at the BREEAM Awards 2024 within the ‘best refurbishment & Fit-Out project’ category.
Previously a tired 1990’s office space, the Georgian building was stripped out and the internal space re-modelled to create a contemporary layout that focuses on collaboration and co-working. It was the intention to create a BREEAM Excellent strategy that focused on optimising material use across the project, maximising credits in both Materials and Health and Wellbeing. Products were selected to reduce their life cycle environmental impact through the use of a robust LCA assessment tool and to create a healthy internal environment through the assessment of all finishes and fixtures. The refurbishment works demonstrated some innovative Circular Economy principles, including pieces of furniture made from marine waste and the reuse of existing carpet tiles, services and lifts.
Originally targeting a BREEAM rating of Very Good, we worked with the design team to improve on this and secure a final BREEAM rating of Excellent. This rating is only achieved by the top 10% of UK refurbishment/fit out projects, demonstrating the exemplar performance of this project.
The winners of the awards will be announced at the 2024 BREEAM Awards ceremony which will take place on Wednesday 10 July.
