Over the last 2 years, we have been successfully working on the BREEAM Infrastructure Assessment of HS2, with Project Detail certification expected by the summer. Through the assessment process HS2 have been able to integrate sustainability from the outset of the project and it will allow them to continue to work with contractors to ensure that sustainable outcomes are achieved.
However, as of July 2019, the assessment method for civil engineering projects will look very different. The BRE are bringing together two existing infrastructure methodologies; CEEQUAL Version 5.2 and BREEAM Infrastructure (Pilot) to create one sustainability assessment – CEEQUAL V6.
This collaboration will combine the legacy and track record of CEEQUAL with the new and innovative thinking from BREEAM. The processes and scoping/verification activities of CEEQUAL and the adoption of the structuring of issues as statements rather than questions from BREEAM will ensure a greater assessment of infrastructure projects.
CEEQUAL V6 will have a much greater emphasis on carbon reduction and will also incorporate the resilience section from the BREEAM Infrastructure pilot. This will encourage proactive hazard identification, risk evaluation and management for the asset and the infrastructure system within which it sits.
Consultation for CEEQUAL V6 has recently close and the official launch is expected in July 2019.
