The Mayor of London published his draft London Housing Strategy for consultation in September, 2017. The document makes it clear that the quality and safety of new homes is a key priority for the Mayor, and that London’s housing design standards will be consolidated into a single new planning document. Strict accessibility and space standards will be implemented, ensuring more of London’s new homes are accessible and appropriate for all Londoners.
All new homes will also be expected to achieve Zero Carbon standards and have appropriately mitigated any overheating risk through passive measures using dynamic modelling approaches.
In addition, the Mayor is calling on Government to promote a Building Regulation system that has an ‘uncompromising focus on quality and safety’. The Mayor is considering what planning requirements around fire safety can be brought forward in the new draft London Plan.
