We are the BREEAM Infrastructure Assessor and Sustainability Champion for the Enabling Works Package for High Speed Two (HS2), Phase One, Area South. To significantly reduce the project’s environmental impact, we ensure that the commitments made within the HS2 Sustainability Policy are being addressed in the most appropriate way. BREEAM Infrastructure is being used to measure the success of this with the project striving to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. Waste minimisation, life cycle impacts of materials and ensuring no net loss of biodiversity are the project’s key ambitions.

The project is incredibly complex in nature, but we have made the BREEAM elements easy to understand. We work closely with many specialists to ensure that specific requirements are incorporated across all disciplines and with contracts who are involved in later stages of the project such as Main Works and Rail Systems.

As BREEAM Infrastructure is now being phased out and replaced with CEEQUAL we are working with the Enabling Works design team to ensure that they are familiar with the new sustainability standards expected of them. CEEQUAL Version 6 combines the legacy and track record of CEEQUAL with new thinking from BREEAM Infrastructure. It brings together the best of both schemes and challenges projects to deliver better outcomes in infrastructure sustainability.
